The Everyday Life
55Your first hike.
So, you're planning on going for a hike, are you? Well lets start off by saying, no matter where you go, hiking can be a dangerous thing. The first rule of thumb, is to always bring along another person, even if the only resort, is one whom probably won't keep up with you. Stick together, and scale whatever it is you are exploring, as a unit. Many people get the urge to wander off of the trail.
This is what we hikers like to call, "Bushwhacking". The name is pretty self-explanatory. Hiking off-trail is a bit of a different experience than on-trail. To put it simply, it's a more exhilerating experience. Why? Well because little, to no people have taken the way you are currently taking, when you are off the trail.
So what, you ask? It is almost as if you are discovering things for the first time, because it is you that is developing this path, off-trail
Make sure you have packed yourself plenty of water, and perhaps a nice snack to go with it, depending on how long you plan to go out. Always bring extra stuff, just in case. (A bag of trail mix surely fits the bill, on the trail, no pun intended.) Among these things, you or your partner should have a first-aid kit; a flashlight; a lighter; a cell-phone; and a knife/hatchet. All of these things are pretty obvious, of why you should be carrying them.
Always be prepared. It is no fun being deep in the woods at night in pitch black, if you have no idea what you are doing.
Well, these are the basics of hiking. Do not do anything you don't believe you can't handle. Always be sure of yourself when scaling up the mountains, and enjoy the great outdoors!
